As the world’s best football nations fight through gruelling qualifying campaigns to make it to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, one of the world’s most picturesque cities stands ready to welcome them warmly. Cape Town is a diverse city and is regarded as the melting point for various different cultures in Southern Africa. One would be hard pressed to find a reason not to fall in love with one of South Africa's most iconic cities, Cape Town. It has one of the most idyllic settings - nestled between the ocean and breath-taking mountains. The iconic Table Mountain rises 1,086 above the city and has served as a mariner's landmark. On a clear day, the flat-topped mountain is visible 200km out to sea. Cape Town is building a new stadium for the 2010 World Cup in the suburb of Greenpoint which is close to the V&A Waterfront and has Table Mountain as its backdrop. Upon completion, the stadium should seat 70,000. What is the 2010 FIFA World Cup all about? The 2010 FIFA World Cup™ soccer tournament will be held in nine cities across South Africa from June 11 to July 11, 2010. Thousands of people will visit South Africa during this period, and the matches will have an estimated cumulative worldwide audience of around 6 billion people. Enormous financial benefits in terms of tourism, marketing and other services are expected across the country, as well as a massive boost in infrastructure investment ahead of the event. Cape Town has produced many of South Africa's top recent internationals such as Shaun Bartlett, Benni McCarthy, Andre Arendse and former legends such as Albert Johannensen and David Julius, who played top football in Europe. The City has also produced many other top footballers that went on to play for some of the top clubs in Europe. Former Manchester United player, Quinton Fortune is one such example. Fortune signed for United in 1999.
